As I continue to process my recent trip to Ndola, Zambia, I thought I’d share a bit with you. My previous experience within the context of extreme poverty has been in Guatemala–in a Latin American culture (vs. African) and in an urban environment (vs. a bit more rural). However, I continue to be amazed at what connects us as human beings, regardless of culture or where on this globe we spend our lives. The beauty that I have witnessed in the slums of Guatemala City is just as present in the small homes and church communities on the outskirts of Ndola. The little things matter. And the slightest amount of hope is grasped onto and held dearly. But the needs, too, are just as great. In Ndola–up to 91% unemployment; malnutrition; lack of education; malaria; HIV/AIDS; widows; orphans; child-led households. The list goes on and on.

Quite often on trips like this, in the moment, I am emotionally shielded a bit by being behind my camera. It is not intentional, though at times I do have to literally bite my lip to hold back my tears and continue doing the work for which I am there. But it is important for me to reconnect with those emotions when my work is done, which is usually after I return home. It is natural to feel tremendously blessed by all that I have, from a protective home to good schools for my children to an abundance of food. And that list, too, goes on and on. But each of these experiences is also an opportunity for healthy change and I have to let myself be impacted by the experience–by the names, the faces, the stories, the homes of these wonderful people who are more like me than I typically understand on a daily basis. With knowledge comes responsibility and I keep learning more and more each time I have the opportunity to experience a new land, a new culture, a new group of people. How do I continue traveling what I believe to be the right path in life while adding this knowledge and responsibility? That is what I will continue to process. If you’d like to dialogue over coffee sometime or simply see some cool photos and compelling video, let me know. I’d love to pass some knowledge on.

Shifting gears in a huge way, last week was another first for Cotton Field Communications. I had the opportunity to shoot orthopaedic surgical procedures being performed on cadavers. It was amazing to watch achilles tendon repair surgery done on part of a leg. Our bodies are so complex! I couldn’t help thinking, though, that there was so much more story kept from us–who was this person who donated their body (in parts) to science? What kind of life had they lived?

I love the varied opportunities for visual storytelling!

Next up is my Africa trip. Very early on the day after Thanksgiving, I was blessed to be able to travel to Ndola, Zambia, with my colleagues and friends from Access Services. It was an amazing experience and we learned a lot. I shot hours of footage, including home visits, interviews and general b-roll around the community. I’ll begin to share more specific info in my next post. Stay tuned…and happy holidays!

It has been a busy few weeks. As Everase continues to move toward a new website, we continue to create fresh video content together. The latest piece is a 5-minute instructional installation video. Check it out at http://www.cottonfieldonline.com/watch. This video won’t be in a public area of their new site. Rather, it will be for customer viewing only. But everyone can watch the time lapse installation video to see how easy installation of an Everase whiteboard can be!

Last week, Beej and I spent the week out in Wyoming, while I had the pleasure of shooting video for Ring Lake Ranch, a spiritual retreat center in the Wind River Valley. It was an amazing week of hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, absorbing the beauty of creation, meeting great people…oh, and working, too. Stay tuned for what video stories emerge from my time at the Ranch. For more info, you can check them out at www.ringlake.org.

You can learn more and view the Everase time lapse installation video and the iRun4Life program overview video at www.cottonfieldonline.com/Watch. Stay tuned for more Everase projects soon, as fresh video content is part of their rebranding effort and will be posted on their new website when it goes live in the next month or so. We also have a complete installation video, several short customer testimonial videos, and will be producing an Everase overview piece. The nonprofit iRun4Life will also be showcasing their video on a new, forthcoming website.

Today, I had the pleasure of speaking to a few local nonprofit folks about the importance of using video to help tell their stories. I am thankful for the attendees and their engagement with the topic, as we had a great discussion. Many thanks also to IQnection for inviting me to speak at this event. Video is so critical, especially to the organizations that have so many compelling and emotive stories to communicate, but professional-quality video is often deemed unattainable, mostly due to budget constraints. If you believe in the importance of using professional-quality, affordable video in your communications strategy and you would like to explore how to achieve your goals in this area, I’d love to help. Let’s start talking about what stories you want tell.

Since last summer, I’ve been working on a project with the nonprofit Access Services in which they were building capacity, through a grant, to develop an in-house video team. We spent at least 40-50 hours with training and found another nonprofit partner for which the Access team could implement their developing skills and produce a video. This morning, the Access team and the kids from New Life Youth & Family Services presented the final cut of their video, an overview of New Life made by New Life student and told from their own perspective. It was an amazing project. The kids had fun, learned a lot, and gained an incredible sense of accomplishment through being part of an extended project from start to finish. Stay tuned for the posting of the final video. It’s fantastic! Many thanks to Access Services, New Life Youth & Family Services and the generosity of North Penn Community Health Foundation.

I’ve often promoted video testimonials as a way to promote a business, utilize video to break up the text-heaviness of a website, or to inexpensively begin integrating video into a communications plan. Video testimonials briefly and concisely communicate a client experience with you and your product or service. In less than a minute, the viewer learns a bit about your capabilities, your client base, and what they will experience when they choose to work with you.

I’m finally backing that up with my first 2 video testimonials. Visit the Testimonials page of the website to see and hear what Brenda Boorse (regional director of Access Services) and Neil Harner (co-owner of Inverse Paradox and co-founder of Philly Beer Scene magazine) have to say about working with Cotton Field Communications.

Over the several days, we’ve had a lot of rain, though it really can’t compare to the flooding experienced in Mississippi and Louisiana due to record levels of the mighty Mississippi River. The current rain seems appropriate, however, as video projects have been pouring in.

The video projects with the nonprofit iRun4Llife have been a lot of fun. I’ve shot the running programs at 3 local elementary schools, including nutritional talks, warm-ups, practice runs, and even yoga cool-down. Last Saturday, in between raindrops, was their annual culminating 3k event. How great to see so many kids participating and how special to be part of a great organization. Kudos to Ivy Stock and her team of dedicated volunteers!

Yesterday, I was invited into a rare valuable experience–one which requires you to push yourself and see just how much you can accomplish in a short period of time. My friend Natalie Wi of Allure West Studios called me into action. We shot all morning at Old Glory Farm (this year’s Bucks County Designer House) in Buckingham Township for a video that needed to be completed in the same day. I transferred footage while eating lunch, spent a little bit of time at the Central Bucks Chamber’s Business Expo, then hunkered down for an afternoon commitment of editing. The final, 7-minute piece was completed and uploaded by 6:30 p.m. Mission accomplished! Many thanks to Nancy Koller and her team of volunteers, as well as to all the designers (especially Holly in the Vintner’s Corner and Richard in the Master Retreat). If you haven’t already visited the 2011 Designer House, check it out. All proceeds support the Village Improvement Association’s commitment to expansion and renovation of Doylestown Hospital’s Birthing Center.

So far this week, I’ve been working on integrating their existing audio, some of my footage from last June and recently shot b-roll in and around Mi Casita. This particular piece as the rare privilege of containing original music. My friend Phil and his bandmates have offered to create original music for all of the short videos that I produce for Lemonade International. Stay tuned for when the video gets posted.
